Transformation and Rebirth

My longtime client Joe came to me with a very abstract, conceptual request for a sleeve illustrating hopeful themes of rebirth and transformation from struggle.  I took this idea in an experimental direction, hoping to evoke an esoteric feeling while simultaneously making use of an existing tattoo, rather than attempting to construct a logically organized scene.  The next picture in this gallery shows a close up of the re-worked lettering tattoo where I used some special effects through a layering process.

This was a super fun ode to Dr. Seuss tattoo. Ive always loved Dr Seuss art growing up theres just a fun vibe to it. We did this sleeve in two back to back day sessions so 4 sessions total from two different trips. I would like to run through it one more time and these are pictures taken from the night we finished after doing about 15 hours of tattooing for that session and the day before. So i could not get rid of the glares in the picture. hopefully ill be able to post an update to this in the future

NewEngland Cottontail

The New England cottontail (Sylvilagus transitionalis) is a species of cottontail rabbit represented by fragmented populations in areas of NewEngland. This species bears a close resemblance to the Eastern Cottontail, which has been introduced in much of the New England Cottontail home range. The eastern cottontail is now more common in it.

New England cottontails are virtually identical to eastern cottontails. The only way to tell them apart unequivocally is to view skull characteristics or by DNA analysis. Generally, New England cottontails have slightly shorter ears and smaller bodies. New England cottontails have a black spot between their ears 90% of the time (compared to 40% in eastern), they always lack a white spot on the forehead (eastern has the white spot 43% of the time), and they have a black line on the front edge of the ear 95% of the time (easterns 40%).

Populations have declined by 86% over the past 50 years. Because of this decrease in this species' numbers and habitat, the New England cottontail is currently a candidate for protection under the Endangered Species Act. Cottontail hunting has been restricted in some areas where the eastern and New England cottontail species coexist to protect the remaining New England cottontail population.

Rabbits require habitat patches of at least 12 acres to maintain a stable population. In New Hampshire, the number of suitable patches dropped from 20 to 8 in the early 2000s. The ideal habitat is 25 acres of continuous early successional habitat within a larger landscape that provides shrub wetlands and dense thickets. Federal funding has been used for habitat restoration work on state lands, including the planting of shrubs and other growth critical to the rabbit's habitat. Funding has also been made available to private landowners who are willing to create thicket-type brush habitat which doesn't have much economic value.

This healed sleeve is a reminder  of how short life can be and that we need to live life while we can instead of just existing.  The hourglass of time is running out so make the best of what life has given you.  The client has dealt with Crohn's disease and takes medication to keep it at bay but he doesn't let the disease rule his life.  Instead he has chosen to live a healthier lifestyle and to live life to it's fullest.  He is an avid skydiver and has amassed well over 100 jumps thus far.  The tattoo is all Silverback XXX and done by Larry Brogan www.tattoocityskinart.com in Lockport IL.

I had a great time doing this Steam Punk Heaven & Hell themed color sleeve.  Angel and Demon pinups with dragon and flying turtle action.  I even tattooed this guy three days in a row at Jeff Gogue's Off the Map N/W back in July.  With awesome skin and heals perfect everytime, Scott is one of my favorite clients.

I got to finish off this Day of the Dead tattoo a few weeks ago.  I wanted to take this piece in a bit of a different direction and thought it would be cool to add a bit of a Soho flair to it to mix it up a little.  I had a bit of a tough time getting a good pic of this tattoo but hopefully the 3 views help a bit.  After the first session my client had asked me about the possibilty of turning the arm into a full sleeve involving covering up some older work with some creepy/horror girls.  Should be a fun sleeve!

African Mask

This African mask tattoo was a lot of work, took several sessions to complete. Most of the mask is healed in this photo, flowers and a little bit of the black are fresh. Here is a little run down on why she got this tattoo. She decided to get this piece because it was her Grandpa's  favorite art piece as well as hers. This Mask was hung in her Grandparents house since she was a little girl. They collected a lot of African, and Columbian art. When her Grandpa passed away her Grandma sold the African mask, and it was something that broke her heart. Her Grandpa was an important man to her, and now it doesnt matter thats it's not in her Grandparents house anymore beacuse it's on her now to enjoy forever!

Utah Prairie Dog Tattoo. Deb, my client is a wildlife biologist and she worked with many animals, one specifically, this Utah Prairie dog, she worked with them for about 7 years. There are 5 different species of prairie dogs, but this species, the Utah dog is a threatened species. Too many people just use them as target practice. At one time they numbered over 95,000, now there are fewer than 5,000. She's wanted this piece for years and I was happy to make her day!

This piece is a Black and Gray full sleeve on a really awesome client from Wisconsin. We tattooed majority of this piece over 2 days at the Texas Showdown festival in El Paso. I was honored to win "Best of Show" with it and come home with a badass wrestling style belt for a trophy.  The main concept behind the tattoo was vintage/elvgren/girly/antique and Steph was pretty open to me putting my own twist on it.  It has a small cover up in there too. It still has a bit to go to finish it up on the upper and inside of the arm and also some tightening to do on the lower areas but I thought I'd post a pic anyway. When it's fully finished and healed I will get some pics up of the whole sleeve.

Ocean Sea Life Fish Tattoo

I did this ocean life half sleeve tattoo on a cool client with the last name, Fishman. All the creatures represent someone in his family, including a piranha tattoo on the inside of his arm (which can be found elsewhere in my gallery). In fact, we put the piranha on the inside of his arm, as they are a freshwater fish. The Angler fish is at the bottom since they are deep sea dwellers. The sea turtle and great white shark were a great addition. I must note that this half sleeve was a bit of a fun experiment for me. I did one fish/animal at a time; rather than starting with the traditional method of mapping in the entire sleeve. It was a different process that I really enjoyed. Thanks for looking. I use all Intenze Products.

I tattooed this piece at the Ink n Iron convention in Long Beach CA. This was my client Dustin's first tattoo...He sure didn't hold back! Eventually this will become part of a full sleeve that we will do which will include some more creepy/horror related stuff along with some day of the inspired stuff too. Dustin sat like a cham, especially for his first tattoo, definitely looking forward to getting a start on the rest of the sleeve. We also won a "best of day" with this piece.

Color Portrait and Filigree Frame Tattoo. Started at Ink N Iron 2012. Finished at MD. I tackled this piece with more of a traditional approach; starting with outilning the entire piece and doing a lot of black & grey undertones. This was super fun. All Intenze products.
